Sunday and Monday

Posted by Sam

Last Sunday we flew into San Salvador, El Salvador and made the six hour bus trip to Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Monday morning we began our first day of work building two houses in Sector Ocho. My team's house site was a rough one. It was a small space after climbing down a steep hill. But we had kids on our site the whole day. Jimmy, who is a little boy that my friend Erica became really good friends with, lives there and he worked with me all day helping us pound nails into the boards for a needy family. He amazed me over and over again with his little servant heart. He always wanted to be the one hammering, he just wanted me to hold the nails for him. :)  And I would go to take a break and play with some of the other kids, or to get some water and he'd come find me to bring me back to work with him. He wanted to be by my side the whole day, serving. It was a beautiful reminder of what true servanthood looks like. He never gave up, he stayed until the job was done, and he gave it 110%. It's funny how much you can learn through working with a child for a few hours. They have such a pure faith that shines through everything they do. On that same house site was a six year old little girl named Stefani, and she was absolutely beautiful, and such a sweet little girl. She asked me to move into her house and live with her. It nearly broke my heart. Another little girl who I barely spent time with at all wrote me a note at the end of the day saying that she just hoped that I would remember her, because she would remember me. And she said that she hoped that I loved her, because she said that she loved me and adored me.   All of that to say, that it never ceases to amaze me that we come to this country to serve the people of this land, and they ALWAYS end up blessing us far more than we could have ever imagined. It just doesn't seem right that as americans we have been blessed with so much and the people here live in desperation-not knowing where their next meal will come from, but somehow they always bless us far more than we could have blessed them. Monday, was great day, rough on my heart, but I wouldn't trade it for the world.
